Our Right for Domain Names

Individuals in Oman are allowed to own real property, postal addresses, mobile phones, and emails, but not domain names. There is no justification for this prohobhition.

I wrote an article for the Times of Oman about the right of individuals to register domain names in Oman. You can view the article at the Times of Oman or you can get the PDF version of the article from here.

Checked the details for .OM registration. Through the website only .com, .gov, .edu, .net, .org, .co, and .med are allowed.

But according to their rules many more are extensions are allowed under .om. Looks like they have to update their website….

Amazing. Is that domain names generally? How would they know if a resident had bought a domain name outside the country?

There are no restrictions on buying domain names generally in Oman, mostly because a .COM domain name can be purchased by anyone with a credit card from any domain name registrar regardless of where the person is based.

However, you cannot purchase .OM domain names online, you have to get them from Omantel, so they will impose any restrictions the TRA issues.

You can know who registered a domain name by using a WHOIS service, example: http://www.whois.sc . You can check details of .OM domain names by using the OMNIC WHOIS service here http://www.omnic.om/onlineUser/WHOISLookup.jsp .
